How does caliper gauges work:

External caliper gauge are used to accurately measure external dimensions by using spring-loaded measuring points that contact the outside surface of the object. A dial indicator or digital display will then show the precise measurement which can be up to 1 micron resolution! It is great for measuring outside diameter of pipes and other large curved surfaces, particularly where other calipers might not reach. Other uses include measuring the thickness of materials such as boards, plates, or other flat workpieces
